7 Day Family Volunteering Adventure

Sepilok - Kinabatangan River - Sukau Reforestation project - Sandakan

This adventure will take you and your family to the Lower Kinabatangan Wildlife Sanctuary, home to the singing gibbons, orangutans, proboscis monkeys, sun bears, hornbills and the pygmy elephants as well as a host of other rarely seen wildlife. Here, you will carry out some habitat restoration work by planting trees and maintain planting sites which are vital for orangutans and pygmy elephants. You will stay in the local village of Sukau and visit the homes of the gentle Orang Sungai or “People of the River”.

Your itinerary

Day 1

Your adventure begins in Sandakan with a pick up from the airport. You will be met and transferred to your accommodation in Sepilok where you will meet your project coordinator and other participants.

Day 2

After breakfast you will transfer to the small village of Sukau which you and your family will call home for the next few days.

There will be a short orientation around the village and a briefing on what to expect during your stay.

You will live within the community of the village, dine with the gentle Orang Sungai or “People of the River” and wake up to the sounds of the rainforest. You will help in the restoration of wildlife habitat and contribute towards the environmental education of the local school children while on this programme.

Day 3 - 5

The next few days are all about the river and the efforts being made to maintain this beautiful but fragile area for generation to come.

As a family you will be involved in activities such as:

  • habitat restoration including tree planting, nursery care and seedling generation
  • A lot of time is spent observing wildlife in their natural habitat. This is done from a boat cruising along the main river and its tributaries within the wildlife sanctuary.
  • Rumble in the jungle. Your family will go for a trek to understand what the rainforest traditionally offers the inhabitants in terms of of medication, food & survival
  • Contributing back to the community is a big part of this project. Most Lunches and Dinners will be in private homes. You will learn about the daily life of the villagers and their family structure.

Day 6

Today you will have to say good bye to the river and depart for Sepilok. Visit the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre, Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre and Rainforest Discovery Centre.

Transfer to Sandakan airport or continue your journey on an individual basis.

You will treasure the memories you create during this unique family adventure forever and most families have a little time to finish this experience with an overnight stay on Selingan Island for an opportunity to learn about turtle conservation or fly across to other parts of Borneo for some lazy days by the beach. There are many options that we recommend depending your family's interests.
