Sepilok - Kinabatangan River - Sukau Reforestation project - Sandakan

Live the mystery of the Bornean rainforest when you participate in this project located alongside the Lower Kinabatangan River. This wildlife sanctuary is home to singing gibbons, orangutans, proboscis monkeys, sun bears, hornbills and the pygmy elephant as well as a host of other rarely seen wildlife. The main part of the project will be in Sukau village and you will live among the gentle Orang Sungai or “People of the River” learning their ways of life and joining them in their homes for meals. Participants will contribute significantly towards habitat restoration work by planting trees and maintaining planting sites.

This tour starts on the 21st of every month. From $2399 per person.

Your itinerary

Day 1

Your adventure begins in Sandakan with a pick up from the airport. You will be transferred to your accommodation in Sepilok and meet the rest of your group at 18.00 hours for a welcome dinner and briefing.

Day 2

After breakfast you will transfer to the small village of Sukau where the project site is located. Along the way you will get a chance to stock up on anything you  would bring along with you.

After checking into your accommodation, there will be a thorough Health & Safety briefing followed by a walk around the village.

You will live within the community of the village, dine with the gentle Orang Sungai or “People of the River” and wake up to the sounds of the rainforest. You will help in the restoration of wildlife habitat and contribute towards the environmental education of the local school children while on this programme.

Day 3 - 10

From today you will have early morning starts to get busy and finish your daily objectives before the mid day heat.

The itinerary and activities will vary depending on time of year and weather conditions.

Some of the objectives are:

  • Carry out habitat restoration at the Lower Kinabatangan floodplains where flora and fauna are abundant but threatened by diminishing habitat
  • Conduct wildlife population density data while cruising along different parts of the river
  • Observe and appreciate the orang-utans, pygmy elephants and other endangered species, understand their life cycles and the intricate biodiversity roles
  • Work with the local community and students in conservation
  • Raise awareness on responsible living and travelling among tourists, local community and students
  • Understand the threats to habitat and wildlife and to make a personal impact, bringing positive change.

Day 11

Today you will have to say good bye to the river and depart for Sepilok. Walk through the Rainforest Discovery Centre to reinforce what you have learned about the rainforest the last few days.

After lunch, visit Sepilok Orang-utan Rehabilitation Centre where you will learn about the challenges of orang-utan rehabilitaion. After this session, you will head into Sandakan and check into your accommodation.

Enjoy some leisure time and try to catch the sunset from the rooftop bar.


Day 12

Transfer to Sandakan airport or continue your journey on an individual basis.

This adventure ties in perfectly with the 14 day Volunteer Program at the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre.
For those who want to spend a few days relaxing by the pool head over to Kota Kinabalu for a resort stay or fly up to Kudat for a few relaxing days at the tip of Borneo. There is an option for everyone and we will help you make a choice.
